losin' it

Mark isn't improving. In fact, he's only gotten more worried as the hours have gone by. Last night he got worried because he took a bite of salad and it was spicier than the other bites. He's convinced that a tiny bit of chemical he got on his shirt at work fell into the salad - oh yeah, and into the Brita filter we keep in the fridge. Mind you, this is after he's taken his shirt off once, put it back on, worked out for 40 minutes and came home. And he worked with the chemical much earlier in the day. But still, he thinks he has been poisoned.

I kept my mouth shut and just listened sympathetically until he asked me what I thought. I told him that I thought he needed help. And so that's why I'm looking at a list of psychiatrists sent to me by Mark's doctor. I'm making an appointment for him today. I can't take this anymore.

Hello! Things are going fine here at Casa Jen. Weight loss is happening, but only a little at a time - I'm still about 13-14 pounds from where I want to be (115). Over the past few weeks, I've made some modifications to my diet and been very careful to watch portion size - like the other night we had baked pork chops. Instead of denying myself the pork chops and just munching on salad, I had one small chop. When we had pizza last weekend, I had one slice. It's all about portion control. Whenever I eat fatty stuff, I'm also making sure to eat light for the rest of the day, to balance it out.

Working out is, well, working out well. Mark was down with a groin injury (from lifting something too heavy) but now he's coming back to the gym with me and walking ever so slowly on the treadmill. Baby steps. He's also really down, though, because of his grandmother's recent death, and his anxiety has started to flare up again. He's a worrier by nature, and it runs in his family, but now he's convinced he has cancer. He got thoroughly checked when his groin started hurting, and they ruled everything out and said it was a pulled muscle. But now his acid reflux is acting up, and he thinks he's got stomach cancer. It can be very frustrating to deal with because he'll be normal one minute, and then I'll walk out of the room and come back, and he'll be all sad-looking. He called me at work today and finally said that he thinks he needs some professional help. I totally agree, and I told him so, but I didn't push the issue. I really think he needs to go, because I think the acid problem and the worrying are related...more stress means more heartburn, doesn't it?

Ah well, anyway...gotta get back to work. Boss is out of the office this week and I'm filling in for him...

OK, I can't keep quiet any longer. I know this is a diet journal, but as a journalist I feel compelled to throw in my 2 cents about the whole Jayson Blair flap. It really makes me mad, partly because this guy threw away an opportunity that few 27-year-old journalists get. It's also appalling because The New York Times is supposed to be this bastion of truth and accuracy, and it turns out that they really aren't doing shit to make sure that their reporters are doing their jobs. They brag all the time about how they're the premier paper of record, how they have a whole staff that does nothing but fact-checking, but it's obvious that they weren't living up to that reputation.

Maybe I'm just bitter because I worked for one of their regional newspapers.
